What is the W-8BEN form? #
The W-8BEN form is a certificate of foreign status used for United States tax withholding and reporting.
Individuals who are not U.S. citizens, residents, or Green Card holders, and who are beneficial owners of income generated outside the U.S., should complete this form.
What information do I need for the W-8BEN? #
- Name and Address: Your legal name and mailing address.
- Foreign Status: Indicate your foreign status (Individual)
- Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN): Provide your TIN issued by your home country’s tax authority. Depending on your location, this could be something like:
- A Social Insurance Number in Canada
- A National Insurance Number in the United Kingdom
- A Personal identity number (personnummer) in Sweden
- etc.
- Claim of Tax Treaty Benefits: Specify any tax treaty benefits you’re eligible for.
- Certification: Sign and date the form to certify the accuracy of the information provided.
